Building a process safety platform with Salus Technical

Case Studies 07/12/2021

Salus Technical

Salus Technical is an Aberdeenshire-based Process Safety business, offering consultancy, training and software in order to help customers understand and manage the risks of major accidents within their operations. The organisation, led by David Jamieson, was founded in 2015 and initially focused on the Oil and Energy sector. They now have a wide range of clients across numerous sectors and geographies.

The Salus Challenge

In spring 2021, Salus got in touch with The Data Lab’s TORCH service to explore, validate, and challenge an idea for a new software/data product that they had been considering. Their team had already successfully developed and launched their first software product, Bowtie Master, helping clients to visualise and communicate process risks.

The new proposition will build a database of prior process safety problems; one that will help inform people who were completing a HAZOP (Hazard and Operability study). HAZOPs are a formal and complex processes, common in many industrial sectors; they are designed to identify risks in the design phase of an implementation and allow them to be avoided. They are typically labour intensive and constrained by the expertise available in the room. The new software/data product will automate parts of the HAZOP process and extend the body of knowledge that could be brought to bear in any one HAZOP study.

The Solution

The TORCH team engaged with the proposition and reviewed a number of technical design options. All agreed that the core proposition (and one technical implementation method in particular) was both feasible and attractive.

In parallel, Salus were engaged with The Data Lab Skills team, aiming to secure an MSc student with the relevant skills for a 12-week project. This was successful, allowing a student to join their team across the summer to support in the task of building a working proof of concept for the new product.

What’s next for the project?

Salus are now in the process of testing that proof of concept with relevant contacts in the market, alongside fundraising to support the full build and market launch.

TORCH reflections and feedback

Reviewing the project, TORCH Senior Solutions Architect Iain Henderson said,

“It was great to be able to engage and support Salus in that earliest design phase and ensure that data skills, processes and technologies were factored into the proof of concept“.

Salus Technical Founder, David Jamieson told us,

“The Data Lab were tremendously supportive and were invaluable in helping us to understand the risks associated with our product as well as developing a road-map to have it developed. Our product will 100% be brought to market far quicker as a result. I would highly recommend the Data Lab.”
