A Year of Challenges, Triumphs, and Growth: Reflections from Fash Fasoro

Community & Events, Guest Blogs 09/12/2024

As we close out 2024, we’re pleased to feature this guest blog from Fash, a passionate leader and advocate for a more inclusive and innovative Scotland. In this thoughtful reflection, Fash looks back on a year that has shaped him both personally and professionally. From addressing Scotland’s demographic challenges to empowering international talent and inspiring future generations, Fash’s journey this year highlights the importance of creating meaningful change through collaboration and action.

As I sit down to reflect on 2024, I’m struck by how deeply this year has shaped me—not just as the CEO of DataKirk but as someone passionately committed to seeing Scotland thrive as a more inclusive, innovative, and equitable society. This year has been one of milestones, learning curves, and moments of profound gratitude.

Scotland’s Demographic Reality: A Call to Action

One of the key themes that resonated with me this year is Scotland’s demographic challenge. Our ageing population presents a stark reality—one that requires urgent, innovative solutions to sustain our economy. Skilled migrants are a vital part of this equation, yet the UK Government’s new high-wage visa thresholds are making it harder than ever to retain this talent.

At DataKirk, this is personal. I know the challenges these individuals face because I’ve walked a similar path. That’s why we’ve worked tirelessly this year, alongside the Scottish Government, Skills Development Scotland, and institutions like Glasgow Caledonian and Edinburgh Napier, to create pathways for talented migrants to thrive. It’s about more than economics—it’s about building a Scotland that truly values every contribution.

Making an Impact at Data Talent 2024

Data Talent 2024 was a moment that deeply affirmed why we do what we do. I had the privilege of speaking about how international tech graduates can navigate their immigration journey—a topic close to my heart. Sharing my own lived experiences and offering practical insights to these bright minds was powerful.

My key message? The immigration journey is never one-size-fits-all. By understanding their options, increasing their marketability, and navigating the visa system strategically, international graduates can find their place in Scotland’s vibrant digital economy. The feedback I received was humbling and reminded me of the incredible potential these students represent for our future.

The Highs That Made It All Worthwhile

Inspiring the Next Generation at SICSA

In July, I had the honour of facilitating workshops and delivering a keynote speech at the SICSA PhD Conference in Aberdeen. The energy and ideas from Scotland’s brightest young researchers were nothing short of inspiring. Moments like this fuel my belief in the transformative power of education and innovation.

Empowering International Students

With the invaluable support of CodeBase and Glasgow Eagle Lab, we empowered international students to explore Scotland’s entrepreneurship ecosystem. Their creativity and resilience stood out, reaffirming the importance of nurturing global talent for Scotland’s economic future.

The Scottish Ethnic Minority Talent Summit & Festival

What an incredible highlight! Over five unforgettable days, we hosted our 2024 Summit and Festival, bringing together stakeholders, innovators, and change-makers to envision a thriving multicultural workforce for Scotland. From engaging fringe events to the vibrant festival atmosphere, the week showcased what’s possible when passion and purpose collide.

Winning at the SAMEE Awards

Receiving a Certificate of Commendation at the SAMEE Awards 2024 for our Building Bridges Activities was a moment of immense pride. It wasn’t just a win for DataKirk—it was a win for every young person, migrant, and community we serve.

The Challenges That Shaped Me

This year wasn’t without its hurdles. Visa reforms, economic barriers, and systemic inequities presented real challenges. There were moments of frustration, but they also sparked deeper conversations and strengthened our resolve to drive change. Each obstacle reminded me that leadership isn’t about avoiding challenges—it’s about finding solutions and moving forward with purpose.

A Year of Gratitude and Growth

One of my most rewarding moments was witnessing our young people shine at the INCLUDE+ Network in Leeds, showcasing their co-creation project with YouthLink Scotland, OCYI, and Abertay University. Their passion and creativity reminded me why we invest in youth. Talent knows no boundaries—it simply needs the right opportunities.

I also want to thank the incredible team at DataKirk, our board, advisors, and community partners who made this year possible. Your belief in our mission inspires me daily.

Looking Ahead: Let’s Build 2025 Together

As I look forward to 2025, I feel a renewed sense of purpose. Scotland’s future depends on our ability to attract, retain, and empower diverse talent. At DataKirk, we’re ready to take on this challenge, expanding our reach and deepening our impact.

But I want to hear from you—our community, our partners, our supporters. What do you want to see in 2025? What conversations and actions matter most? Let’s shape the future together. Reach out at info@thedatakirk.org.uk.

Here’s to a brighter, more inclusive, and prosperous Scotland. Thank you for being part of this journey with me.
